[Milsurplus] This has to be a first - TCZ

After the photos and comments posted today about the TCZ, I decided to see
if I could locate whatever documentation I have around here. Couldn't
remember what it was - a page or a manual or what, just remember seeing
something 'TCZ' surface since the move. Having about one third the space
here (if that) compared to the previous location, the reference library
(aka Slag Pile) remains in boxes for the most part.

Walked in to the room where a number of manuals reside since being unboxed
to have a look. Saw the green 3-ring binder marked ART-13, figured that was
a good place to start. Picked up a somewhat tattered gray manual sitting on
top of it. Read the following on its cover:

Serial Number 405-353

Maintenance Manual

(Preliminary Copy to be Replaced by Final Book)

For

Model TCZ

Radio Transmitting Equipment

(more stuff about freq. range, addenda sheet, etc)

Contract: NXs-491 Dated 9 May 1942

Incredible. Not sure if this means I'm actually getting more organized or
should go buy a lottery ticket!

A better look at the same photo shown on Nicks page along with finding the
name Lord Manufacturing, Erie PA in the parts suppliers list seems to solve
the shock mount question. It would appear that the power unit/base sits on
four large 'chairs' (Mike Hanz can explain this term better) likely hooked
to Lord mounts underneath.

A surprise for me is the date. I'd thought this transmitter entered service
maybe a year later, not within the first 6 months.

Also, absolutely *no* mention that I've seen of the term ART-13. Only
COL-52286 and 17H-3. No cross-references anywhere to be seen. Did the
Navy's TCZ/ATC versions enter service before the ART-13?

The two available power supply bases were the 431D-1 (AC) and 431D-2 (DC)
which Chuck has. Interesting remote control box that resembles the TCS
remote box, too.

And even though the manual on Nick's page isn't mine, it turns out I have
one. Neat stuff.
