I noticed that.  Using a standard 30" tall desk, that would put the ATC 
up somewhere above eye level.  They must have had taller sailors back 
then...heh, heh...

There is an outstanding book called "Aircraft Carrier" by J Bryan III , 
about his life on the Yorktown during the war.   He was on board a 
battleship or two during his service and the shock of those 16" rifles 
going off wasn't too bad - they sort of built up slowly and surrounded 
you.  On the other hand, I seem to recall him saying something to the 
effect that he hated the 5" guns when they started firing because the 
shock "would hit him like a plank".  I can imagine what it did to 
electronic items.
