But there was no official replacement available during the 30's  Not until 
the SCR-284 began to arrive just in time for the landings in North Africa in 
late 1942.  The SCR-288 was used briefly in 1941 and 42 as a stop gap 
measure but wasn't available in sufficient quantities for requirements and AFAIK 
had only been built as a pack set (no vehicular variant).  Even if you 
ignore inter-service issues and production capabilities, the same is true of the 
TBO/TBX, which is the only other relative equivalent.
