For more than 20 years I've used a common weapons cleaning oil called CLP
to very easily restore the dark clean look of black crackle or wrinkle paint.
It can take paint that has become almost dirty white/brown and restore the
dark appearance.

After washing away most of the trapped dirt with warm water and something like
Murphy;s Oil Soap (or even Simple Green) and letting it dry a day, I use a
sturdy paper towel soaked in CLP to wipe the surface being cleaned. When
the thin CLP coating has been setting for a few hours or days, I wipe off any
remaining CLP. Most times that I've tried this, the paint surface restored its
appearance to near new. I've also used it to restore in place those plastic
nomenclature plates such as are found on most BC-348-R models and many USN
aircraft radios. The appearance of things I treated 15 years ago look today
as they did then.

CLP ("Cleaner, Lubricant, Preservative") is the small arms maintenance oil that
was adopted by the US Armed Forced 20 years ago. It can be found at all decent
sporting goods stores...not real cheap, but not too bad either. Gun shows are
even better for the less expensive military surplus CLP. You want the liquid,
not the spray version.
