Portable Aldis lamps like this could serve all sorts of functions.  When I
was on exchange duty with the Royal Netherlands Navy in 1973. we used them
frequently for bridge-to-bridge communications from the minesweeper that I
was on, the Hr.Ms. Beemster, to other minesweepers with us.  They were used
most often by the Officer of the Deck or his assistant, rather than by a
signalman.
