Western Electric, (read AT&T), was heavy into proprietary
legalism. I.E., in their carrier equipment the tubes were
tested regularily, and replaced when the Mu fell below a point,
or beyond the calendar time-out which was marked on the
tube. The replacement date was marked on the new tube.
(WECo wrote the book on Statistic Quality Control.)
The old tube was destroyed in a "Tube Crusher", a heavy
metal bucket with a thing like a heavy potato masher in it.
Some of you may know what a "churn" country people
used to make buttermilk looks like.
Naturally, they had their system for naming tubes.
Ex-Long Lines person.
