There was a hamfest in the last few years where I bought an R-392 with the

seller's
stipulation that I had to take a TRC-1 transmitter also. When I looked at
the transformers
inside that thing, I knew that it would be major agony and maybe damage to
my person
just getting it to my vehicle, and that with taking every possible
shortcut.
So luckily I
talked my way out of that part of the deal.
When I still lived in WA state north of Seattle in the early 1990s some
high
school kids
put on a bootleg FM station that I heard, from Bothell WA, it got to my
qth
at about
7 miles with good strength. Someone told me they were using a TRC-1,
possibly
vfo'd, I don't recall. Sounded pretty good - you could say, "tube audio
sound". Of
course their broadcast range led to the predictable result.
