When I was in high school (1963-1967) I haunted all the surplus radio places in the SF Bay Area. There was one located in Belmont or San Carlos CA on El Camino Real called J&H.
For years they had a brand new immaculate TCK-7 Navy xmtr on display with a selling price of $125. No PS, just the xmtr. I longed for that beauty but my parents would not even consider it due to the size. Many admired the radio but it just sat there, month after month. Perhaps the fact that it was huge and actually had no more power and inferior (screen grid?) modulation compared to the compact plate modulated ART 13 that made it unattractive?
I went off to college and lost track of this gorgeous relic. I used to turn knobs and watch the stack of Veeder root freq indicators change numbers, imagining that it was powered up with its motor generator PS and ready to send its signals across the Pacific.
I wonder where it ended up? Anybody else in the SF Bay area remember this radio?
I harbor this fantasy that it is still in a garage somewhere nearby, safe and dry, and will eventually go on the market again.
