I went to one estate sale in Seattle, the fellow had been something like
"District MARS Coordinator" or something like that. I found shipping
manifests from truck lines for deliveries that must have been hundreds
of lbs. of equipment. I think I still have some of that paper around. I got
the impression he just placed the order - from what kind of catalog? -
and it was shipped out. It was pretty picked over when I got to it. I
recall there were a few field telephone switchboards in the basement -
some local fellow was having Boy Scouts disassemble them for training
on using tools.
Dave, I think the bureaucrats got out of control in general, but I don't
think they had much in common with John Lennon, who I suspect might
have turned out to be a Libertarian.

I was an Army MARS training net control back
in the mid-1970s. In many of the state MARS
orgainizations, there was a lot of "good'ol boy"
involved in who got what. Carping about this may
have had something to do with it being cut-off.
But I also think the "John Lennon" types who came
in with the Carter administration brought the
attitude: "let's destroy the tools of the baby killers"
and that attitude has survived to this day.
Don't get me started on that ;-).
