When I first joined the Radio Club here in San Antonio, a ham who worked at Kelly Field made a presentation on "Ear Emitted Speech", apparently still trying for an alternative to hand held microphones.

John answered the technical portion, but apparently the British throat
mics were no better than the U.S. versions, at least according to the
Bell Labs tests...their engineering analysis concluded that they would
have been "a good idea but for the fact that the sound available from
the larynx is basically unintelligible"...
