Well, actually, I was moved to a smile myself, but perhaps Dick's last
sentence should have been worded with a mention of our *American* sense
of humor.

It certainly is, except for the fact that colors do not remain constant
over a wide range of light conditions. At the very low cockpit light
levels that one would use in a night mission, any of the darker colors
tend to go gray, and the lighter ones trend towards white. Add UV lamps
and it is even more complicated. Try it and see...:-) There were
experiments well before the war that resulted in the final U.S. approach
of white numerals on black background, and the contrast works fairly
well in all light conditions.
I wish the U.S. experiments with the dynamic microphones had been more
comprehensive - the British used them with great success because of
their significantly improved intelligibility compared with carbon mics.
It wasn't for lack of trying - the mid-1930s U.S. aircraft sets had a
dedicated interphone amplifier for dynamic mics. The final decision
seems to have been economic in nature - you save a stage of
amplification with the carbon mics. Or maybe we just like repeating
ourselves to make sure we're heard...

Another good one! Thanks for the second smile of the day, Ben.
