[Milsurplus] Collins Avionics Cooling & Connectors

The rack these units go into has a suction plenum under the units. Cool
air comes in the front or top and leaves at the bottom of each unit in
the rack. The airflow ratings are for demanding, high altitude service,
not amateur use at ground level. Some forced airflow is needed, so be
sensible but don't panic over exact figures. ARINC connectors are
available, but extremely expensive. All I have ever seen use crimped on
connections, so you have to hope the pins you need are installed and the
wiring is long enough to connect to or reach where you want it.
Otherwise, you will have to find new pins and the tools to insert and
remove them. There are aircraft scrappers, but all I have contacted are
not friendly to hams. One of them was happy to sell me a "slice" of an
old Boeing 727 containing the radio racks and wiring for three thousand
dollars plus shipping. A nose and cockpit costs far more, and
simulator enthusiasts are happy to pay it.
