About 3 years ago I bought a 1978 Toyota FJ40 (land cruiser) on ebay. Mistake I made was buying it from a person in a state that had ZERO state inspection requirements (at the time I didn't realize such a thing even existed!) So there were some things I had to get done for NY like tail lights etc. Yeah, it needed more work than advertised, but it was an alright deal (Still have it!).

I would NEVER buy a car off eBay. And I do buy used cars (two so far) via.
Craig's List.
This is for several reasons:
IMO, most eBay cars are from dealers. That's never good, IMO.
I want to L@@K at any car, touch it, smell it, and drive it.
eBay Customer Support is a farce. Trying to get satisfaction outta them is futile. Been there, got screwed.
Before I buy a good looking car, it goes to the VW independant mechanic for a full list of needed repairs.
So far, I've bought 2 Jettas with about 100,000 miles for <$2000 each. I'd still have the first except for a teenage kid paying no attention to anything but his very pregnant girlfriend next to him, while driving his brand new big red piuckup.
