Tiring to listen to as well. Was big into DX for a number of years after
getting licensed, but between the pinched audio and me-me, contest-like
mentality, it got old fast. SSB is great for getting a signal long distance
with minimal effort, but not much for the rag chew approach. Technically
it's fone also, but definitely a reduced version.
Some of the best AM signals out there come from old BC-610s and T-368s.
They punch out a good CW signal too.
