I just finished the restoration of this set and wanted to thank all of you who helped out with suggestions, tips etc.
This set now looks and performs great. I am very happy. I figured I'd recap what I learned in case anyone else works on one of these sets in the future. In my last email, I covered recapping of the power supply and the above-chassis cans (IFs and 1st Detector).
I recapped the three under-chassis boxes without incident. I found something interesting. A prior owner had recapped the 1st Detector box with black beauties. When he reassembled the set, he used only two of the four screws needed to attach that box to the chassis. The result is that the box sagged a bit and bent the bandswitch shaft. Even if some of the screws are tad difficult to reinstall, all four should be reinstalled to prevent this problem.
Under the tube shelf, a prior owner had replaced the 1/2 watt resistors with 2-watt resistors, most of which were far from the correct resistance. I'm wondering if he used 2-watt resistors because the leaky caps were causing some of the 1/2-watt resistors to overhead. In any event, after recapping, the 1/2-watt resistors run nice and cool.
The RF alignment was a real trip. Tuning was off by 200 kc or more on each band. On one band (8-11 mc), the alignment was so off that I was getting images of stations on the 25m SW band about 1 mhz higher. A careful alignment fixed those problems and really improved sensitivity. It took some time, however.
