It was. The receiver was very similar to the BC-639.
The Brits were far ahead of us at VHF.
The BC-638/639/640/RC-81 combination were of very
good design, although the connectors on the RC-81
were weird. I have a lot of time on this equipment, and
it usually had both the US Army Sig Corps AND the Royal
Signals name plates on them. I don't think the BC-640-A
or B had them both. I used the SCR-522 in all our Control
Towers, and in Ramp Vehicles. Never did like the squelch
adjustment on the receiver being where it was.
Trivia: During WWII, two aircraft with 522's configured in a
relay mode were used to extend the range of Command-Control.
I found it very easy to maintain, and a real learning experience.
Turn the BC-639 upside down and it looked much like the
schematic drawing on paper. When tuning the BC-640 one
would learn more about Neutralization than is in any book.
