Thanks for the price info, Ed.   The Canadian Ebay sellers were 
peddling them in
the $120 area.   After getting two for my grandson, one did not work and had to
be sent back for another one.  So of the two, one of them has a faulty squelch
but still works.  (Heck my real 611's don't have squelch anway)

We occasionally see used ones appearing, but with the earlier experience, they
may not work at all.

Did you find a way to open them up?  There's no manual or schematic available
but if they could be easily opened without breaking them, they might 
be salvageable.
