I had one of those a long, long time ago. It was OK for listening to local FM conversations on 52.525, as there were no adjacent channels active back then. So, listening to the FM channels, including milsurplus is likely acceptable, until you want to pull in a weak station on an adjacent channel to a strong one.

What kind of amateur service are you contemplating, Mike #1? The tuning rate and stability will make SSB a real challenge if not a downright impossibility, and CW is a bit of a question also. If someone shows up with an AM rig, it would likely handle that OK, but I don't recall what the 'designated' AM frequency on six meters is, or even if there is one.

So, it depends on what you expect to be able to listen to.

About as satisfactory as the Halli S-27 from which it was repackaged,
with improvements that were then injected into the S-36 during the war.
http://aafradio.org/flightdeck/early.htm has a bit on them. If you look
closely at the front panel of my ARR-5 at
http://aafradio.org/countermeasures/ARR-5.jpg , you will notice that it
doesn't have a bandspread dial, and that may be a problem for you on
6M. The portion of the frequency dial that covers 6M is very small -
same as the S-27/S-36. There is also a fairly broad isolation
(anti-radiation) stage in the front end that needs bypassing...that is
most easily done by simply inserting a mica capacitor into the tube
socket between plate and grid - no destructive mods needed.

Having said all that, you probably won't be happy with it if you compare
it with 6M converters or more modern receivers, but working with WWII
radios has an aspect of masochism in it that seems to appeal to a lot of
us. :-)
