Clete and George,
There is a third can, often found in tan but I've seen two sizes in OD.
The 5 gallon size became the standard NATO fuel (gasoline or diesel) can.
This has an integral spout and lid or closure. The opening is (can't recall
the name for the shape) roughly square with rounded corners except one side of
the square (the pouring side) is slightly wider than the opposite side.
I'm not sure whether the original of this design was British or German, but it
wasn't US. The five gallon ones I have or have had arrived on the back of
a 1960 Land Rover so came from the UK. The cans themselves were probably
made in the late 50's or 60's. These are desert tan. The lube oil kit I have
(with two much smaller versions of the can) is OD.
