The other 5 gallon can, same shape, different spout was a water can. Not as many of them around apparently, we could find lots of the gasoline cans surplus here in San Antonio in the 50s, but the water cans, which we used for camping on spelunking trips were much more difficult to find. Still have one of the gas cans, couldn't hold on to a water can, though, too much in demand.

You milsurplus people may know, but I have
a small question.
From WWII Jeeps and 6X6's I remember 5 gallon
cans for gasoline which attached to the outside of
the vehicle.
I definitely remember two models of those "Jerry"
cans. One model had a large screw lid, with a small
chain retainer. Most cans were colored OD. There
was an accessory spout that used a rubber seal, but
these did not come with the can.
The other model had a small opening, and used a
small rectangular hinged cover. These cans were
usually Tan or Sand. Were both models ours?
I thought they were both five gallon cans.
Anyone know about these?
