"The Great Escape" is probably my favorite WWII movie. I saw it when
it was first relaesed while I was in middle school, and because of my
personal situation, identified strongly with it. The foxhole radio
and other improvisational articles in magazines were surely aimed at
15-16 year olds who would likely be in the service in a year or two. The
public library then and there had Popular Mechanics and Popular Science
from the late 1930s onward in bound volumes. I would read them
endlessly, and used many of the project plans to build radios and sound
equipment from trashed equipment I could scrounge, sneak into the house,
and hide.
