The best comment on WWII movies, at least recent ones, was: "Thin Red Line" was for Democrats, "Saving Private Ryan" was for Republicans and "When Trumpets Fade" was for real.

Thanks to those who commented on my comment.
My follow up is: blood and gore would add realism to the screen but the
story is still fantastic, and I use 'fantastic' in its original sense. I
just
have a problem with fiction; I see no need for it; or at least it should
hew closely to actual events in history. Television series, however,
are different: they had to recount a truly memorable incident every
week. The details, and the flaws we see in their presentation, all
follow from that central untruth - the rest is just not that important.
Like, I'm thinking, the "Morality Plays" of medieval Europe: the lesson
is the thing.
I don't have any tolerance for works of fiction any more. I open the
books section of the weekend newspapers and read about "X's lastest
novel", or "Y's first novel". I think, if they have that much time on their
hands, why not do something worthwhile with it, like learn machine
programming, or a language, or a musical instrument, and not just
produce more disposable product for the conveyer belt. Same for cop
shows, etc. etc., sorry.

My father was up front but not up frontmost, as were the infantry.
He didn't see many war movies, my mother hated those, but I
recall he did see and liked the movie "Patton", and had his own
comments on what it was like to serve under Patton, which were
mostly tending toward admiration, while knowing full well Patton's
strictness and demands.

There are many features of front line combat experience that
wouldn't have looked too good on the show "Combat". Like maybe,
GI's grabbing food off the table in that house, or taking a quick look
in the drawers for jewelry. I think combat war memoirs in the last
few years have become a lot more complete and truthful than in
earlier years. -Hue
