It's worth a try.  Last year SAQ was heard in 
Nevada, and I think California.  It won't be easy; mostly you have to
get away from (or neutralize) your neighbor's light dimmers, etc.

I'm in Massachusetts about 50 miles from the seashore, with a 500 foot
Beverage, and usually hear something, but maybe not readable through the
garbage.  Beverages are good, but at 17 kc should a few miles long and
you could copy on a crystal set.  With a short antenna, such as ham
antennas tied together, I hear NOTHING.

E-Field probes and magnetic loop antennas might be the way to go.  Some
experimentation is in order.
