I doubt that military users of this equipment did that very often.

However, I acquired a RT-91/ARC-2 in 1975 direct from Fair Radio that had
been internally modified for single-channel crystal control.  Fortunately,
the mod was easily and totally reversible, almost as if the perpetrator
knew the unit might someday need to be restored to its original state of
purity without leaving any sign of having been violated. :-)
