I have never known this to be true...ever !
I once sold a radio for $3200.00, shipped it UPS, insured it for $3200.00 and they beat the hell out of it. I met their requirement of 3" packing all around. It took me over 3 months to collect. Claim was denied repeatedly. The shipper doesn't know or care about insurance, only the insurer... who is most certainly a 3rd party. This is confirmed by my son-in-law who is a 20 year FDX employee.
I now double box anything that is near fragile...and triple box glass items such as tubes.
