Re Chicago museum U-505: the regime of the dullard
Vic Danelov fortunately is no more. Acidic rain, believe
it or not, was damaging this vessel at its outdoors location,
and it having been long time proven as a main draw at
the museum, these facts finally engendered a creative
idea for the museum management, and the submarine
was moved indoors in the last few years. I have not
been there since this was done.
The quote was from the "Sharkhunters" website. I had
been looking thru some old Popular Communications
and in an '83 copy there was a story about a U-boat
replenishing station on Darby Island in the Caribbean.
The article was by Harry Cooper, the founder and main
man at Sharkhunters. I was looking online to maybe
research some more and see if this was more than
"a story", mean, with some more attribution. The
"Sharkhunters" website I found pretty interesting
and they have an amazing selection of DVDs on
war subjects, mostly U-boat history, but many others.
HOWEVER, as with MANY third Reich interested
people, fascination seems to lean into admiration
and exculpation and EXCUSE. If Harry Cooper's
website has statements that the war seemed
to be just a competition among corporations;
that Germany had to invade Poland to protect
civilians; that Germany had to invade Russia to
push back Bolshevism; that SS POWS suffered in
US POW camps ( I really don't care about that,
and don't have much sympathy for SS ); well, count
me out as for being a member.
After looking at the website, I sent a longer version
of the above to the founder main-man. It's a shame
that a site with such rich resources seems to have
a defective moral compass.
