Gang,

I'm contemplating building an electrical reproduction of the German
field set at the bottom of this page (my site):
http://www.skywaves.ar88.net/xtal/xtal.htm

On paper this looks like a much better radio than the U.S. Army BC-14
that we copied from some silly French set.

Consider these points:

- The detector is tapped down on the secondary in the two
tuned-secondary positions of the right-hand switch. This should avoid
the detector killing the Q of the secondary. I've personally observed
this as a shortcoming the the BC-14

- The secondary tuning dial is calibrated in wavelength. This should be
reasonably accurate with light coupling.

- There is a separate untuned secondary selected by the right-hand
switch. This lets one discover a station by just tuning the antenna.

Looks like these guys knew what they were doing. Assuming the phone
jacks are on 19 mm centers, the front panel is about 9 x 12 inches.

Does anybody have any info on the detector? What mineral(s), inside
view, etc.?

Regards,
Al
