[Milsurplus] Foxhole Radio - conclusion

I went through some of my old notes and found that X-ACTO knife blades
worked well
with standard #2 pencil lead. But I did not note which blade, it
might have been the ones
made out of "Oxidized Carbon Steel" or 1095 Carbon Steel what ever
that is. :-)

The "blue blades" started to be painted in the 1950s time frame. I
remember the subject of "foxhole radios" being discussed in magazines
like Popular Electronics in the late 1950s and early 1960s. People
were complaining that the "blue blades" then available would not work
at all. The reason noted was that the blades were then being painted
instead of heat treated. The suggestion of letting a "plain" blade
rust was made to get a suitable detector.

Interesting.

When did they start painting them? I tried using one as a detector on
the 1960's and had no luck. I went back to my 1N34 and 1N48's.
