: Where can I read more about these marketing devices?
I don't recall the name of the product or their website. The one I saw was
on a pole on Azusa Ave. in Azusa California. I looked at the data plate
with binoculars and made a note, then took several photos. I looked online
and found the company that builds it and provides the marketing info,
someone in Canada. This was around 1995.
The device was built on a metal cross-arm about 3' long. In the center was
a control box for the electronics, on one end a loop antenna, on the other a
vertical whip. There was also a cellular antenna and solar panel. This
thing would detect the radios RF from vehicles that pass by, note the time
and station listened to, then call the controller and upload the data.
Demographics were then provided to local radio stations for selling
commercial air-time based on what stations were listened to and when.
Here's mention of a device:

A google search of: mobiltrak car radio monitoring brings up 347
results for this one company. Click on "images" to see their equipment and
other devices carried on a person!
