You got it almost right Kurt, however they were coherer receivers. There
were of course a lot of others tried, but, the Fleming valve came on the
scene pretty early as did deForest inserting a grid in it. - Regards - Mike

They used coherers, called such because the materials inside tended to
cohere in the presence of electromagnetic and electrostatic fields, thus
closing the circuit. It was also a vacuum tube. Tell me about this shaking
process...
