Subject: [armyradios] 400 Hz Static Inverter

In looking for a static inverted to output about 500 Watts of 400 Hz, it
ocurred to me that it might be possible to modify a current 60 Hz inverted
for 400 (or 800-2400) Hz.

My rationale is as follows:

Years ago, static inverters took 12/24 VDC and used that as the supply to
the center tap of a power transformer as push-pull drive. This needed a
big, heavy, expensive custom transformer.

Now, there has been a clever change. The 12/24 VDC is up-converted to
about 170-180 VDC using chopper FETs and a high frequency transformer,
running at >20 kHz. This HF transformer is small, light, and cheap.

The170 VDC is then converted to a square wave, or modified square wave,
with an "H" bridge of transistors or fets, possibly filtered, and then to
the device being powered.

Has anybody tried modifying such a supply to provise frequencies other
than 60 Hz? I suspect it'd be pretty easy.

Alternatively, does anyone have prints for a roughly 500 Watt unit that is
currently available?

Thanks,

-John
