Hi Ray:

You could use modern rechargeable batteries.
If you run the radio from a couple of lab bench power supplies you could make a plot of the current draw for a range of 
input voltages.
My guess is that the existing batteries have a range of voltage that's highest just after a charge and there's some 
minimum voltage where the inverter no longer starts.
But it's common that the inverter will accept voltages slightly higher than the max battery voltage and that's where a 
modern battery pack might fit when fully charged.
