If the Nomenclature Plate/Tag can be removed from the panel(s), any of the suggested methods may work. IF the Plate/Tag is riveted in place, your options are more limited, but still quite easy.

After painting the Plate/Tag, cover the area around the Plate/Tag with masking tape to protect the finish of the panel. Take a small piece of fine grit (wet or dry) sandpaper (400 or higher) and WRAP IT AROUND A SMALL DOWEL or other UNIFORM DIAMETER object like a pencil. WET the sandpaper (with water). Place the dowel so that it spans the RAISED BORDER around the Tag. Gently sweep the dowel with sandpaper across the Plate/Tag and it will slowly remove the paint from the raised lettering and the raised border. The dowel keeps the sandpaper at a uniform height above the Plate/Tag at all points. The dowel must always be resting on the raised border surrounding the Plate/Tag. The sandpaper should be wet for a smoother finish. This technique also works well with BRASS Plate/Tags which have RAISED, corroded lettering. Once the lettering is nice and shiny, clean up and cover with car wax, or a coat of clear paint. KA3AIS
