Scattered around. I don't know about the Midway but on the later Essex
Class the main transmitter room was if I recall correctly, on the 02 or maybe
03 level toward the forward end of the flight deck, starboard side. On USS
Valley Forge (CV-45/CVS-45/LPH-8) there were near the end of her service life
two AN/WRT-2, two AN/URC-32B and one AN/WRT-1 installed there. Yorktown as
best I recall was about the same. Located in various spaces in the island
structure were another AN/URC-32, another AN/WRT-1, a space full of TED/RED,
a space full of AN/VRC-46, one AN/URN-3 and several radar sets. Plus a TCS
and a TDQ/RCK pair. Radio 1, AKA Radio Central was on the 05 level I think
and contained about a dozen R-390A's, one AN/SRR-19 and several AN/URC-9
and AN/SRC-21. Plus AN/URA-8B's, AN/URA-17's and one AN/SGC-1. No TTY. Plus
all of the transmitter and receiver transfer switchboards. In the late
60's, the only personnel in the space while underway were a couple of RM's
whose job was to tune equipment in the space as ordered and to do the patching.
Most of the TTY gear and all of the TTY Crypto gear was in Main
Communication which was below Central. In the late 60's Main Comm was manned by maybe
a dozen RM and the CWO (Communications Watch Officer, who at that time
coincidentally was a CWO3). Main Comm rather than Central was where most
comminications work was done, except to the helos. I've not been aboard Lexington
but assume it was similar. I'd guess that Midway wasn't too different.
