While I was a bit later than John - we were fat fingering machine code via
panel switches on home machines by then - I agree wholeheartedly with this.
A lot that is key to understanding how things work the way they work has
been lost in the rush to embrace new technology.  I'm not saying computers
in general and spreadsheets specifically are bad, just that I am very glad I
didn't have them when I was an engineering (AE/EE split major) student.  It
forced me to actually learn what's the what and why.  Of course having an
MSAE as a father just made it worse.  :-)
