6J5 is an octal base signal triode, the 6SN7 is an octal base twin triodes. 6SN7 is like two 6J5 in one envelope and way more common. 6C4 is the same tube but in 7 pin version with the 12AU7 being the 9 pin dual triode version and also common as dirt. Yea, I know that they are different tubes and before someone tells me as usual I have no idea what I am talking about and how they each have a different plate capacitance or power dissipation they are close enough and are all medium Mu triodes and if you just want to experiment with triodes that have good low voltage characteristics you can't go wrong with any of the above. Would find it hard to believe that you would not be able to find any of the above locally but if you need one let me know off list and I can send you any of the above with a socket for $5 each, also think I have some little 6.3 volt 1.2 amp transformers same price each.
A story about the 6J5 back in the seventies when I was in tech school we had LabVolt electronics trainers that you would build up circuits with all the components mounted on little plastic blocks that you connect together with clip leads and I remember that they had a 6J5 for when you built up the tube circuits. Biggest problem was some people would connect B+ to the filaments so any time you had to do a tube project you had to check the tube and see if it was still good, maybe that was deliberate to teach us how to use tube testers?
