Radio Frequency Laboratories (1922)
Aircraft Radio Corporation (1927)
-Wholly-owned subsidiary of RFL (http://scr-274-n.info/history.html)
RFL was formed by one of the Bakelite makers (Loanda Hard Rubber Company?)
to find uses for it in radio. They designed the radios, Stromberg-Carlson
built them and ARC installed and maintained them. Or that's how it started.
ARC took over the design function and eventually manufacturing. In 1934,
there was a major shakeup and ARC was the top dawg with RFL a wholly owned
subsidiary along with a few others. They also became independent of the
Bakelite company that originally formed RFL although continued to use it
until the end of WW II.
RFL instruments were used extensively by ARC throughout the design, testing
and manufacturing phases, a relationship that continued even after RFL
became independent of ARC at least to the Cessna era.
Trivial side note: One of the major trouble spots with ARC equipment was the
connectors. The phenolic insulation used in it would absorb moisture and
become a general nuisance as a result. While nothing was done about this
before or during WW II, the postwar Type 12 equipment used ceramic
insulation in the connectors and gold plated contacts which were significant
improvements.
