Being anode modulated it may some extra help to achieve best modulation 
and linearity.
This circuit is similar to the Globe Scout and is very well explained on 
W8JI's website about Heising modulation.

The Air Pub doesn't give any more detail other than calling it an audio 
frequency bypass condenser.
