[Milsurplus] Work-Arounds for expensive triodes?

I was looking at the first pages of Thordarson catalog 340 from 1934, in the 
audio
amp section, and I see there was quite a bit of free spirited adapting tubes 
to
connections different from their design use, to use multigrid tubes as 
triodes.
Examples: 2A5 grid 2 wired to plate
46 two grids tied together
59 2 grids connected together, screen connected to plate

Maybe there is some potential here for workarounds for high priced triodes,
using less sought after tubes, repurposed.
