Eugene,

Good article on the ATD by Walt Hutchcens, KJ4KV in Electric Radio
#35, March 1992.

This is the radio that came in "second place" to the ATC (ART-13) when
the Navy let a contract in 1940 for a new aircraft liaison
transmitter. Ultimate application of the 1939's plug-in tuning unit
concept, i.e., four plugged in at a time with a manual and motor
driven switching arrangement. MOPA rig, 6L6 ECO driving an 814 PA.
Plate modulated by a pair of 6L6s. Good for about 40 watts carrier.
Way behind the ATC in capability and technical sophistication but
probably cost MUCH less to manufacture.

For some reason Bendix designers chose to use gobs of 2W carbon
composition resistors in series and parallel arrangements in screen,
cathode and other circuits instead of single wire wound units with
appropriate dissipation ratings. I found many of these components to
be FAR out of tolerance in my ATC.

Interesting and unique rig and, though. Works reasonably well in ham
service on 160, 75 & 40M.

Have fun.
