[Milsurplus] What are these?

Interesting story sorta about Hawthorne. Among other things, it is or was
the standard repository for unexpended obsolete ordnance (conventional,
anyway). In late 1990, just before Desert Storm, the remaining stock of MK 82
low drag bomb bodies at NAVMAG Guam were scheduled to begin loading on USNS
transports for transfer to Hawthorne. In the event, they were transferred by
air instead of sea, to Southern Iraq. Supposedly, the Republican Guards
did not enjoy the fireworks show.

Air freight is usually more expensive than sea freight. Especially for
loads in the 25 ton range, and double especially when the air freight line
flies B-52's instead of B-747's. But I heard a rumour through the ordnance
grapevine later that the break-even point for total cost (transportation plus
storage) was less than 20 years. So as of this year, we started saving money.
 :-)

Ben, I realize that the coordinates you gave are not in Nevada.
