Tom,

FT-346, along with the standalone transmitter mount FT-508, are part of 
AN/VRC-5.  They were used in installations with not enough space for the 
FT-237.  I think one installation was in an SP Gun, but I don't recall the 
M-number.  There is precedent with SCR-510/610 in the Amphibious Jeep and in one 
Halftrack where the radio and power supply were mounted separately instead of 
stacked.  The issue there as best I can read between the lines was to keep 
the radio from being visible about the side of the vehicle.
