Does your power supply have the surge-current capacity to 
start the dyno?  Most modern supplies do not and will either 
crowbar or sit there and heat your armature windings.
Try starting and running it for awhile with auto batteries.
If it wont' start, the problem is probably not the brushes;
I've seen one brush holder failure in 40 years.
Check for open armature.  
Be sure to lube the bearings first.
You can get away with opening the 
bearing covers- being careful to keep anything that
comes out so it can go back in the same way, like spacers-
and dripping into the old lube a few drops of electric motor oil
(you can get "3-N-1" in the blue, not red can.  It's marked for 
electric motors).  That will do for an hour or so test.
If everything checks, you can do a better job of lubing.
