So is this what it comes down to? , you can't enjoy your mill radio unless you not only have it all original but now you have to have the correct cabinet too. Almost every R-388 I have ever seen was installed two to a rack with the diversity teletype converter, got to have that also? The 388 is way before my time but I have seen R-390 set up properly in the AN/GRC-26 but have also seen them used in military or other government installations stuffed into any available rack and maybe one once in a desktop case that looked way heavier then the radio but desktop boxes for big receivers are the exception and not the case. Just about all I have seen are rack mounted. If you got a R-388/51J at home think the Bud case would be easiest to live with, not some huge military case that's going to be hard to find, expensive and make a big radio even bigger. But that's just me, lots of others want the museum quality display.
