My 51J-2 fits the "A" Line cabinet without any blocking, etc.  Guess I "lucked up"!

Not really true. The 51J cabinet has a larger cut out in back to allow access to the connectors and cams. While you can get the R-388 into the other cabinet, it blocks access to the connectors on back and can also cause binding on the cams if the cabinet is the list bit dinged in that area.
 
All R-388s I've seen were rack mounted, Rick. They usually include a set of dust covers for this application complete with a screwdriver clip on back. The civilian 51Js were usually mounted in cabinets.
 
Howard Mills makes a reproduction cabinet for the 51J which will work just fine, but last time I checked they are around $500.
