I thought I had posted a reply, but don't see it on the reflector. Alden was the name I was trying to remember, and the various variants of paper, burning stylus, wet chemical, whatever, must have been all deposited in the same 50+ year old leaky memory cell in my head and gotten all mixed up. We ended up using the pink Alden paper, I remember the color. But, somewhere I was also exposed to the other process, because I also recall the high voltage and that acrid burning smell, even though the name Teledeltos is completely unfamiliar.

Thanks, everyone

The paper that was marked by burning off the coating was Teledeltos,
invented at Western Union and made for them by their suppliers. At one
time the process was secret, so they had several different suppliers
doing different parts of the production.

There are several articles about Teledeltos in the Western Union Technical
Review, which is online at massis.lcs.mit.edu google for it.

Wet chemical papers were made by Alden and Hogan. Alden's was sepia
colored, and Hogan's was called catechol and was gray colored. The two
companies argued a lot about which was better, but to the end user
both of them were fairly lousy.
