The NDSM was MUCH more selective in award criteria than that Cold War
certificate.  And...historically...the Germans awarded more Iron Cross
Second Class medals in seven years than the US has awarded NDSMs in 60
years.  Numbers are similar for all those Soviet WWII medals, vs. 
the lowly "I was alive in 65" NDSMs.

Today, the "Global War On Terrorism" Service Medal is equivalent to the
NDSM, but the NDSM is still being awarded along with it.  Then, there's
the "Global War On Terrorism" Expeditionary Service Medal, if one actually
deploys to a war theater.

Good for morale, the military politicians (generals and admirals) say.  
Sheer and complete idiocy and bullshit, I say.
