Clete,

I'm not necessarily saying that the receiver you remember wasn't a BC-348 
but your description of the panel connector describes pretty well the one on 
the BC-312 family of receivers (312, 314, 342 & 344).  The center 
spring-loaded button shorted the low-Z input to ground if a connector wasn't attached. 
 I've had mating cable connectors but don't think I've ever had one on an 
original cable.
