Found an interesting on-line resource recently. Check out
http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/008338644
for scanned copies of the Bureau of Ships Journal 1952-66. You can
view it all on-line and download pdf's of individual pages, but you
can't download entire volumes unless you are a member of the
consortium of universities behind this.
Ships Journal has many useful tips for overhauling aircraft carrier
catapults and the like, but every now and then there are interesting
articles on shipboard electronics. For instance, go to vol 2-3 and
search on "vhf to uhf" and you'll find the July 1954 article entitled
"Converting Fleet From VHF To UHF Communications Was Intricate Task"
Fun to browse in any case. These are organized by volumes containing
about a dozen issues of the journal so you have to page through the
volume to look at all of the table of contents. Every issue has a good
table of contents inside the front cover, and there are periodic
indexes to articles. Also the "Search in this text" box is quite
useful. The "Jump to Section" button will sometimes take you to
interesting places, but seems pretty inconsistent.
There may be other useful publications accessible through this web
site - let us know what you find.
cheers,
