There's an interesting wikipedia article with a lot of references at

It was a monumental waste of effort and lives which had a completely
negative effect on the war effort.  It would be interesting to see
exactly how the B-17 and PB4Y-1 aircraft were electronically configured
for this role, including the radio equipment and frequencies used.
